Historically speaking, 58 years are just a tic.
It seems to have been sufficient for the US government and the American people to forgive and forget. Have you noticed any signs of hostility on our part towards Germany, Italy, or Japan.

If Europe's brand new military is to
have any credibility, it'd better pick a French or a Belgian or a Scandinavian boss.
If the boss is French. I'd suggest they be most careful who they pick. The French seem to delight in stabbing us in the back. With friends like the French, who needs enemies?

Do you honestly think this plan will wean the British from their alliance with the US?
