It's not so different here. With the ridiculous housing prices we have workers commuting 2 hours each way in the S.F. Bay area in order to live in an affordable home. You have to be pretty motivated to put up with that...along with the traffic, overcrowding, and the loss of civility that goes along with these conditions.
I'm a second-gerneration Californian, and at one time, maybe it was very different than the rest of the country. Now, much less so. People have always been drawn here by opportunity, which attracts motivated people.
From the amount of posts on this thread, I would judge that none of us are overworked by historical standards!
