Regions in Recession
By Mark Zandi
dismal.com
The broader information technology and financial services industries are expected to experience a substantial
comeuppance in coming months. The nation's large coastal economies will weaken.
By the time they do, however, the inventory cycle among traditional manufacturers
should be winding down and the Midwest and Southeast economies will regain their
footing. Under this scenario, a national recession will be avoided.

The risks are, nonetheless, high that the inventory correction will be more
substantial and longer than anticipated. Indeed, if consumer confidence deflates
further and consumers retrench, manufacturing's problems will have only begun, and
the Midwest and Southeast recessions would intensify. With the nation's technology
and financial centers also weakening, a national economic downturn could be
unavoidable.

While a national recession is not expected this year, it is fair to say that there will
be no regional economy of any consequence that will be able to avoid the pernicious
effects of the economic slowdown.

Weekly Economic Activity
Well we sputtered again last week. This is beginning to concern me. I had expected a stronger seasonal upturn to have begun by now. Patience for another week. Maybe the dollar will decline some.
