And numbers are hard to get your head around -- for example, there are more people in China who speak English than there are people in the US period. When WTO comes to China next year, the pace of growth and global integration is likely to increase. An understanding of China and Chinese people will come in handy for the next generation of Americans -- and heaven knows there is little if any understanding now. Any decisions made at the political, economic and military level needs to have a view of what short-term actions will mean in the long run -- I am not advocating sucking up, just understanding the implications of decisions and having a consistent way to behave ia what will work best. And of course, above all else, person-to-person contact is critical.
