That's speculation Rarebird. I don't think Europe will be able to sustain a higher economic growth than the US for long. Certainly Japan hasn't been able to as we've seen from the most recent Tankan data.

Europe doesn't have the proper financial or political structure in place to weather a global downturn, imo. I may be wrong, but I think we'll see European growth decline markedly as their own consumer confidence catches up the figures being reflected here in the US.

It your perception was correct, we'd be seeing capital flight to the Euro, and not the USD. And obviously the current hoof and mouth debacle creates additional pressure on European unity and the strength of the currency.

I see more of a risk of the USD declining against gold more than against the Euro, at least until they restructure their financial and entitlement system.
