Intel to slash Pentium 4 prices: 2.2GHz P4 in offing theinquirer.net
And old Mike Magee is getting a little wild on the rumor front. I wonder about this stuff. The 2.2 part is listed as "toward the end of the year", which makes it not exactly news, I think that time frame in the road map formerly had ">2ghz" penciled in. The price cut stuff is a little more proximate, and somewhat less believable:
Chipzilla will make further, large, price cuts to its Pentium 4 range on the 29th of April when it will now introduce the boxed Pentium 4 at 1.7GHz. This will arrive in two boxed versions, depending on the amount of Rambus bundled.
The Pentium 4 1.5GHz price will then plunge by 51 per cent, the Pentium 4 1.4GHz price will slump by 48 per cent, and the Pentium 4 1.3GHz price will fall by 27 per cent.
Er. In three weeks? What the heck, 50% cuts would almost make the P4 competitive with the Athlon on price performance, except for Rambus and the expensive mobos. I will break form and quote Mike's old rag and their more believable take on upcoming Intel cuts.
Next week, the current top-of-the-line 1.5GHz P4 will fall $562 from $637 (down 12 per cent), the 1.4GHz part will hit $375 from $423 (down 11 per cent), and the 1.3GHz chip will go to $268 from $332 (down 19 per cent).
On 27 May, the 1.5GHz to $455 (down 19 per cent), the 1.4GHz (down 16 per cent) to $316 and the 1.3GHz part to $241 (down 10 per cent). theregister.co.uk |
