That is a different line of argument, having to do with unintended consequences.

I think comparing moral outrage over gross human rights abuses with snobbery (looking down one's nose) is yet another way of trivializing the matters at stake. If hectoring is effective, than hector. If not, do something else. But why should we sit on our hands? Out of concern for what a bunch of thugs will think of us? Heck, even when it comes to our allies, I think some amount of disagreement is inevitable, and therefore I would not be troubled if we didn't always see eye to eye.
