Avici Systems Expands Into Asia; Expansion Targets One of World's Largest Telecom Markets

N. BILLERICA, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 9, 2001--Avici Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: AVCI), a leading provider of scalable core routing solutions for intelligent IP-over-optical networks, today announced the opening of offices in Beijing and Hong Kong, to better target one of the largest telecom markets in the world. Avici's new offices, its first in the Asia-Pacific region, will enhance its ability to support local customers and partners.

According to telecommunications analyst firm RHK, the Asian market is expected to account for 48 percent of worldwide Internet usage by 2003, with China alone adding two million users per month. "The exponential growth of Internet use in Asia validates the need and demand for new IP infrastructure. In order to compete in the worldwide IP router market, Avici Systems is establishing a strong sales, service and support presence in Asia," said Steve Kaufman, president and COO of Avici Systems. "Regional customers and partners will benefit from our direct presence in this market."

Avici's sales, service and support capabilities in Asia include partnerships with Nissho and Itochu in Japan, Samsung in Korea, and CommVerge Solutions in the Pan-Asian region.

Avici is the only vendor with a proven scalable core routing solution to fulfill carriers' needs as they create 21st century networks to increase profits, reduce costs and improve the velocity of provisioning new IP services. Its TSR(R), a leading core routing platform, though capable of reaching terabit speeds, is -- more importantly -- incrementally scalable from gigabit to terabit capacity while in service, unlike competitive fixed-configuration routers. With the TSR, Avici is capitalizing on the rapidly expanding worldwide market opportunity for core routers, which RHK estimates to be $4.5 billion in 2001, $8.6 billion in 2002 and $12.7 billion in 2003.(1)
