White House Energy Policy to Emphasize Nuclear Power, WSJ Says

Washington, April 9 (Bloomberg) -- The White House has put together an inter-agency task force to develop an energy strategy emphasizing nuclear power and increased drilling for natural gas, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing senior administration officials.
The task force, created in response to California's energy crisis, will also focus on building more gas pipelines and making land available for power plants, the paper said.
Vice President Dick Cheney is leading the team that includes the secretaries of treasury, commerce, transportation, energy, agriculture and interior and the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, the paper said. The group plans to make recommendations by mid-May, the paper said.
The new focus on nuclear power is a departure from President George W. Bush's ideas on energy policy outlined during his campaign, the paper said. Cheney is convinced that additional nuclear power is needed to ensure the country has sufficient energy supplies, and the administration is persuaded by improvements in both safety and reliability in reactors, the paper said.
No nuclear-powered generator has been licensed in the U.S. since a reactor accident at the Three Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania in 1979.
