And you be sure to resort to insults when reason fails you. Sure, you can hunt around on the web and individually download a complete system from bits and pieces, in addition to the stuff you pointed to, you can go get Apache from somewhere, a servlet runner from somewhere else, netscape from somewhere else again, yada, yada, yada. The commercial Linuxes bundle all this stuff. Also, I believe that you don't get the "good" C compiler/linker/debugger without paying Sun some money, though I'll admit that may have changed in the year or so since I last looked.
I have the "free" Solaris x86 and yes I've installed it, along with Linux, BeOS, and several versions of windows, just to try them out. I can tell you that the Solaris x86 install was the buggiest and most troublesome of all of these, and came with the least stuff pre-packaged in easy-to-install form. Admittedly, it was two years ago that I got it, perhaps it's improved. Oh, it did come with StarAwful, which I ran screaming from after some bad experiences with the usability and compatibility vis-a-vis MS Office. Guess that's one up on Linux |
