Three values compete here. Equality, freedom, and economic efficiency. The US gives relatively more weight to the last two, Norway to the first.

There is no economic efficiency to having a large percentage of your population below the poverty level...that's a myth. The reason the last ten years have been so economically successful is due to the successful efforts on the part of the Clinton administration and the states in getting a number of people off welfare and above the poverty line for the first time in our history.

Its why the current slowdown defies the normal recessionary definition...why people are unsure of what's developing. Amazing things happen when you get people off welfare and into a job.

And for the record, Norway is very entrepreneurial...not all of Scandinavia is the same.
