Gus.. just because you find Mormons practicing polygamy, according their still sacredly held religious beliefs, as odd (and certainly illegal), I don't see the comparison to the Taleban.
Mormon theology practices the idea that God was once a man, who had many wives while a mere mortal, who eventually was "exalted" to godhood, by his god. According to their theology, god now spends most of his time making "spirit children", who will ensoul our mortal bodies, thus beginning the cycle anew.
The LDS church, under extreme pressure from the US govt, was forced to declare polygamy no longer be practiced here on earth. But they still firmly believe they will find additional wives (women who never married) when they die. In fact, Mormons actually carry out proxy marriage ceremonies for deceased single women and girls who never married. I've heard they believe that the "spouses will have the right to reject one another in heaven".
So comparing the mormon theology to any other mainstream religious theology in the US, is being just a bit far-fetched. The mormons have "hoed their own religous row(roe?) and generally are shunned from being considered a traditional christian religion based upon biblical context.
And btw, I grew up in a mormon community and while I may not agree with the religion, I've grown to respect and care about many of the people. So please don't take this as an attack. It's merely a statement of fact.
