IMO the US should play a leadership role. Developing nations will look at the US and say what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Nuclear power is a good energy source in the right hands. However if we set the example with nuclear power then we have to expect that other nations will want to follow our lead. We already know that poorly designed/constructed plants in the wrong hands can have catastrophic results.

Wouldn't you say that natural gas is a cleaner burning fuel more favored by environmentalists opposed to coal and oil burners causing acid rain?

Agreed...although *less disliked* may be a better characterization. I am sure they would like hydrogen a lot better. However a nation can not run on wishful thinking. The nations electric supply has evolved towards NG in large part due to the environmentalists and where did it lead us? The California electric crisis is really a natural gas crisis. If the natural gas industry can't supply the goods as has proven to be the case...what do we do? turn on backyard diesel generators? What is the natural gas industry's response? Just use less and pay more!

Our energy supply should be...

1. Domestic
2. Green and Clean
3. Abundant and sustainable

From a practical point of view coal is a must. It is an abundant domestic resource and with proper implementation can be green and clean. It will last for several hundred years.

We should take the BILLIONS saved by using coal in lieu of natural gas and invest it in solar energy...thermal and photovoltaic.

Maybe Bush, who will swing the pendulum back a bit, will force some new compromises upon old misconceptions as we learn more and negotiate changes in the universe we inhabit? Even though some may think he's starting from a negtive viewpoint, a new debate may occur that will be useful.

His ideas seem arrogant, old, tired, steeped in politics and favoritism and totally lacking in imagination and vision. The Texas oil boom ended in the seventies...the push for a Texas last hoorah is short sighted, selfish and does not have the nation's best interests at heart.

We have had energy debates before. When the crisis stage diminishes the memories will fade fast and we will move blindly towards the next and more devastating energy crisis. Are there ANY high mileage American made cars?

Debate is useful however we need competent leadership to lead us out of a crisis. On a scale of one to ten the California governor gets a one and the US president gets a two on energy matters.
