WaveRider's LMS3100 Wireless Network Supports 'Smart Community' In Minnesota TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 10, 2001--WaveRider Communications (NASDAQ:WAVC - news; FRANKFURT:WRV.)
Residents of the City of Roseville among the first in the world to receive high-speed non-line-of-sight fixed wireless communications.
WaveRider Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:WAVC - news), a leading global provider of fixed wireless Internet access products, today announced the sale of its LMS3100 non-line-of sight wireless product to the City of Roseville, Minnesota. The City has purchased WaveRider's LMS3100 system to establish high-speed wireless connections with residences throughout its municipality.
WaveRider's LMS3100 enables the City of Roseville to quickly and cost-effectively install and deploy a fixed wireless network that establishes communications links to its residents' homes. The City of Roseville will use the wireless connections to more easily and effectively manage the administration of its core city services, including water utility management and fire safety services.
The LMS3100 is WaveRider's advanced fixed wireless network product that delivers high-speed Internet access to homes and businesses via non-line-of-sight communications. It includes a small end-user modem and indoor antenna that can be installed by the consumer, making it a cost-effective solution to establish Internet connections over the 'last mile'.
``Essentially we are looking at building a communications pipe into the home, because an IP-enabled home is a smart home,'' said Terre Heiser, Network Manager, City of Roseville. ``We had explored other options for creating a smart community, and found that the non-line-of-sight fixed wireless connection was the most cost-efficient way to maintain the 24-hour connection required for such activities as monitoring fire safety devices. It also delivers the bandwidth required for the management of these services.''
The City of Roseville, which has a population of more than 34,000 people, plans to activate the LMS3100 system in April, 2001 and to initially install 25 end-user modems and indoor antennas for application and program development. In addition to the administration of city services, the LMS3100 will facilitate City of Roseville residents' access to the city's Intranet and to the Internet.
``The deployment of our LMS3100 in the City of Roseville is an exciting project for WaveRider,'' said Charles Brown, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, WaveRider Communications Inc. ``This initiative demonstrates the versatility of the product and emphasizes the need for non-line-of-sight data communications networks for applications that extend beyond traditional Internet access and personal communications.''
WaveRider's LMS3100
WaveRider's LMS3100 delivers non-line-of-sight connectivity using the license-exempt 900 MHz ISM frequency band. It provides throughput speeds of up to 1 Mbps to residential and small business users over a one-mile range. The range can be extended to up to four miles with a line-of-sight installation. The LMS3100 end-user modem connects directly to the subscriber's computer and can be self-installed by the user.
A basic LMS3100 system can service up to 300 subscribers and can be easily expanded to incorporate additional LMS3100 systems or upgraded to WaveRider's LMS3000 network-managed non-line-of-sight product, which can accommodate thousands of users.
For Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and telecommunications carriers, LMS3100 is a cost-effective solution to deliver high-speed Internet access to residential and SOHO customers. The non-line-of-sight end-user modem and indoor antenna for the LMS3100 can be easily installed by consumers, which eliminates the cost for professional installation services associated with traditional wired Internet access. In addition, its low cost for the network and upgradeability enables service providers to introduce wireless Internet access to a small number of customers and upgrade and expand their network as they grow their customer base.
