Kemble - that article reinforces my points exactly. DELL is "fast following" the storage models that seem to work, waiting for others to validate the markets, then going after the sweet spot. Not a bad strategy - hey, worked so far, right? But not a leadership strategy either.

DELL is now very consistent in their description of their plans and in their execution. Get back to the core business model, execute within that framework, go after the growth goals by expanding the model to adjacent markets (larger servers, storage) while cleaning up the imbalance in global sales (weak performance outside of NA and the UK). That sure looks like a fine tactical plan.

But as this article noted, DELL will be locked out of effective competition in heterogeneous storage even if they have SAN components, since they can not play across the enterprise base without considering the Unix boxes at a minimum. Given that virtually all of the SAN business is into that mixed environment, that approach will keep DELL as a niche player, supplying compatible components for SAN storage.
