I'm surprised that it would be considered acceptable for the US pilot to permit the autopilot to be engaged when he has "enemy" fast movers no more than 400 meters distance from his plane.

I'd have my hands on the stick for the entire period, if only to ensure that I could react immediately to any sudden movements and not find myself trying to "grab on" and exaggerating any movement of the aircraft.
