Classified.. When the KAL 007 was shot down, the Reagan administration opted to release them to prove irrefutably that the Soviet fighter shot it down.

Of course, they DIDN'T mention we had an RC-135 in the area surveilling soviet missile tests.

But that still did not excuse the Soviets for shooting it down, which they had been denying doing at that time.

Seymour Hersh wrote an excellent book on the KAL 007 shootdown.. "The Target is Destroyed". Still have it up on my bookshelf.

So given the current "sensitivity" of diplomatic discussions, I'm sure the US has probably threatened to release the transcripts of the tapes. But doing so, while the US service members are still in Chinese custody, could prolong the whole situation as the Chinese scramble to rachet up their demands in order to save face again.

Bejing has let the PLA dig itself into a hole they are finding it difficult to get out of. They have spurred nationalist fervor which might turn against them if the wrong kind of information is released.
