Thunder,

re: And would this effect your 'love the stock' position negatively or positively going forward?

Actually it would probably have no effect on my position regarding the stock. It would represent a new market for Microsoft so it could potentially mean more income. Which would further reinforce my love of the stock.

I spend the bulk of my time in a UNIX/Linux world of high end CAD tools not available for MSWindows of any generation, yet I need MSFT products to have access to the Corporate calendaring standard, Corporate email address books etc. and then there's all those email attachments people send in some MSOffice format.

Short of MSFT actually porting their flagship applications to other OSes, our best option is Linux with VMware and running Win2K on top. We get the usage of spare cycles at night on Linux via network wide scheduling software and desktop applications during the day, including the fact that many CAD tool vendors are embracing the port to Linux as their efforts on NT and Win2K haven't been very successful.

It's a compromise, but computing always is.

PS: I've been long MSFT since 1990 when I bought my first 1000 shares. That companies stock bought the house I live in the cars I drive and will provide the monies for my kids college education's. That's not the same as saying they make great software, but it sure does sell well and the stock has been a great investment vehicle for years and I expect that to continue as I doubt their software will get worse or be brought down by Linux.
