No fan needed is definitely good (certainly >20% reduction in heat dissipation, which was my stated "minimum requirement" for Palomino to be competitive). However, the chip could still have been binning poorly, as per my original argument.

Well, I'm sorry but I once again have to disagree. The indication that Palomino would start at no less than 1533MHz is a sign that it's currently binnig very well. That server chip was in fact a mobile part (*MAYBE* with more cache) with reduced voltage and PowerNow! support. 900MHz at 1.4V is no indication of bad binsplit at all.

However, the overall yield (ratio of sellable chips) could be a problem if the size is effectively 150 mm2. Maybe the process is a little different also. One thing that is sure : TBird is certainly a lot cheaper to produce, and brings more volume than Palomino. Actually, the best theory I read is that PowerNow! is rather big and the desktop version will be around 110 mm2.

I would also like to make a comment to those who think AMD is going to sell mobile Palomino >$500... wake up! I'd say $300 at best for a 1GHz and maybe $180 ASP. Mobile Morgans will go for maybe $95 ASP.
