Intel-igent solutions

Hmmm. What to do with a hulking six-story concrete and steel skeleton of an unfinished building?

We all know the story now: Last month, Intel Corp. simply ceased construction of its 10-story, $124 million chip design building at Fourth and San Antonio streets. Indefinitely. Company officials say they can't afford to continue. The downturn in the economy is hurting their stock, they say.

Austinites are not pleased.

Intel officials recently admitted at a public meeting that this project has been a learning process for them. They also said they would investigate making the structure less of an eyesore. In the meantime, the best decoration they could come up with is an 8-foot-tall chain-link fence decorated with several rows of barbed wire.

The Austin downtown was under going a renaissance and the Intel building is in a prominent location. The land development process takes about 1 1/2 years to get a construction permit - So it began around the time when nothing could wrong.
