China will allow the crew of a U.S. spy plane to leave China after completing ``formalities,'' the official Xinhua news agency quoted Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan as saying Wednesday.

Tang delivered the message to U.S. Ambassador Joseph Prueher, who handed Tang a letter of apology for the intrusion of the spy plane into Chinese airspace and for the death of a Chinese pilot whose fighter collided with it, Xinhua said.

``As the U.S. government has already said 'very sorry' to the Chinese people, the Chinese Government has, out of humanitarian considerations, decided to allow the crew members to leave China after completing the necessary procedures,'' Tang was quoted as saying.

The Xinhua report gave no indication of how long it would take to complete the formalities for the release of the 24-member crew.
