Michael,

Good news. The US apologized and the Chinese have agreed to release the hostages.

Why did Bush wait a week and a half to do what he obviously had to do from day one?

Did the US lose any face? Of course not. Only because Bush acted like a spoiled child for ten days.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China will free the crew of a U.S. spy plane having received a letter from the United States saying ''very sorry,'' Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan was quoted as saying Wednesday.

The crew -- 21 men and three women -- would be released after ``completing the necessary procedures,'' Xinhua quoted Tang as telling U.S. Ambassador Joseph Prueher.

``As the U.S. government has already said 'very sorry' to the Chinese people, the Chinese government has, out of humanitarian considerations, decided to allow the crew members to leave China after completing the necessary procedures,'' Tang said.

Prueher handed Tang a letter that said President Bush (news - web sites) and Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) had both expressed ``sincere regret'' for the intrusion of the spy plane into Chinese airspace and for the death of a Chinese pilot whose fighter collided with it, Xinhua said.
