The injection was probably into the nucleus basalis, an area that contains NGF-sensitive cholinergic cells which degenerate during the course of AD. Basalis cells send efferent projections to the hippocampus; the loss of these connections is likely the primary anatomical correlate to the observed memory loss.

I've taken the approach since I studied NGF as a graduate student that injection into the brain would be much more clinically problematic then useful. The results of these studies will be most interesting.
