you don't want, or so it sounds to me, for groups to work towards goals that are the most important to them,
Totally not true.
I want every group to work toward goals that are most important to them.
What I DON'T want is for those groups to discriminate not on the basis of concern about the issues, but on the basis of gender, race, etc.
As a father of young women, I feel I have every bit as much interest in issues of domestic violence against women as a 70 year old never married woman does. But when NOW addresses the issues she is, by implication, included as one of those who care about the issue under the NOW banner, and I'm excluded. My concern is trivialized.
That's what I object to. The implication that men can't care about "womens issues," whites can't care about "black issues," Christians can't care about "Jewish Issues," etc.
Of course, the fact is that women don't care a whit about mens issues, but that's another story. |
