OT Hi Dave, RE: "The US PTO has been fee funded"
I know, I just signed another check for them today. They have pocketed some of our money, probably over $10,000 by now.
And that's the USPTO fees only, not the lawyer's bill.
Our lawyer's bill is a fraction of the cost of the USPTO bills, just to give you an idea as to how expensive USPTO fees are, when you add them all up. Our lawyer has been incredibly generous - the USPTO isn't.
It's rather costly for startups to file patents, but necessary, like insurance. Unfortunately, the cost is too high for most startups, so they tend not to do them.
In our case, I am trying to stuff everything into the fewest number of patents to keep costs low, which is a bit of a risk, because it opens up the risk of a narrow interpretation.
I think startups should have some type of tax advantage for this.
