I hope that we see an increased trend towards special purpose processing. The current trend of throwing more and more transistors at a general purpose CPU is getting rather inefficient. Other than increasing the size of the cache, and lengthening the pipeline, there haven't been any significant improvements in CPU's in about 10 years.

Caches are past the point of diminishing returns, and the P4 pipeline is already too long. Cheap transistors provide opportunity to move functionality into new accelerators. This approach has been very successfull in the last year with hardware based T&L engines.
