Ted- It appears that we have had another breathtaking display of ignorance concerning QCOM on CNBC this morning . I don't know for certain if its true, because I wasn't watching, but apparently there was a negative report on CNBC this morning arising out of the Bloomberg report that China would delay a decision on which 3g technology to adopt until 2002.This has apparently been misconstrued by CNBC and others as meaning that the construction by China Unicom of a 2g CDMA network has now been delayed to 02 and now may never occur.

Ted, nobody was expecting a decision on 3g from China this year anyway. In fact, I think 2002 was a bit ahead of when most people expected China to make a 3g decision.

In any case, this article has absolutely no relation whatsoever to Unicom's plans to build a 2g CDMA network with contracts to be let later this month. To the contrary, every indication in the Chinese press has been positive on the rolllout.

In passing, it should further be noted that the 3g options listed in the Bloomberg article (CDMA 2000, WCDMA, and TS-CDMA) are all CDMA technologies. While QCOM has its own opinions (which it has not been shy about expressing)as to which of the various flavors of CDMA is to be preferred, over 50 manufacturers from around the world have signed liscensing agreements with QCOM wherein they are obligated to pay QCOM the same royalty regardless of what flavor of CDMA is used. So it is difficult to see how the story could be interpreted as anything but good news for QCOM by someone with a proper understanding of the issues.

Any assistance you can provide in allowing for a balanced clarification of this mornings misreporting would be much appreciated.

Respectfully.
