Or, it could mean that those who go into education tend to be less religious, and teach, consciously or unconsciously, their biases with their lessons. Not saying this is true. But it's one option that would explain the finding.

Interesting particularly in view of the fact that in the Western world it was the church, pretty much, which preserved what learning there was during the dark and middle ages, and which was responsible for most education. Most of our early colleges in this country were founded either as schools of divinity or by religious bodies in some form.

Any disconnect between learning and the church seems to be of fairly recent origin.
