Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC Celebrates First Year as a Hands-Down Success; First Anniversary of Award-Winning iPAQ Pocket PC

HOUSTON, April 12 -- The Compaq (NYSE: CPQ - news) iPAQ Pocket PC, named the ``World's Most Powerful PDA'' by the Guinness Book of World Records, lived up to this honor with a power-packed first year of awards, outstanding product reviews and customer response unlike any other Pocket PC on the market.

In just one year, Compaq has expanded the iPAQ Pocket PC family of products and solutions to offer customers more choices in functionality and wireless access. Launching the signature color H3600 series with 32 MB of RAM last April, Compaq soon began offering additional models to satisfy customer needs, including the H3100 monochrome series and most recently, the color H3670 -- the industry leader in Pocket PCs with an astounding 64 MB of memory.

In addition, Compaq has also supported the popular handheld with a variety of services and accessories, from the Expansion Pack system for extended functionality to iPAQnet Mobility Solutions, which were developed to allow wireless access to the Internet, Internet-based email, corporate Intranets and email, and web-based applications with the iPAQ Pocket PC and other Compaq mobile products.

The merits of the iPAQ Pocket PC also secured its place among world leaders at the 2001 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Referred to as the ``star attraction'' of the conference, Compaq provided a full end-to-end solution -- from servers and a wireless local area network to access through the iPAQ Pocket PC -- that allowed conference participants to not only follow conference events with the wirelessly connected handheld, but also allowed access to their personal email and the Internet.

The iPAQ Pocket PC received much recognition over the past year, for both its functionality and design. Following are just a few of the more notable accolades:

CNET Editors' Choice Award (June 2000) -- ``The shiny, silver speed demon has a great screen and some thoughtful extras that make it much easier to use than other Pocket PCs.''
ZDNET Tech Trendsetter Award (June 2000) -- ``Compaq Corp. has officially unveiled the long-awaited iPAQ Pocket PC, easily the best implementation of this new platform to date.''
Fortune Magazine Technology Guide ``Product to Watch'' (June 2000) -- ``The first iPAQ handheld PC is a stunner, both in looks and performance.''
eWEEK Labs' Analyst Choice (June 2000) -- ``Combining unmatched expandability and generous speed in a lightweight, power-efficient chassis, Compaq Computer Corp.'s PocketPC-based iPAQ H3600 soars beyond the current crop of color handhelds ... ''
PC Magazine Editors' Choice (July 2000) -- ``The Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC wowed us with a brilliant screen and top-notch battery life.''
PC Magazine Editors' Choice: Wireless Devices (August 2000) -- ``The iPAQ's 206-MHz processor and 32 MB of RAM made it a solid platform for running all the new third-generation Windows CE applications. With a forthcoming snap-on sleeve, this stylish Pocket PC will provide CDPD wireless Web access with full-color graphics.''
CNET Consumer Electronics Top Ten Must Haves (September 2000) -- ``The iPAQ H3650 is the first Pocket PC device we've seen that can challenge Palm OS handhelds. Its 206-MHz, 32 MB of RAM and exceptionally bright and readable color display make the iPAQ a powerhouse.''
PC Magazine Technical Excellence Award Finalist (November 2000) -- ``Compaq may not have invented the handheld PC, but the design of the Compaq iPAQ H3600 Pocket PC takes the market a step closer to the ideal ... And did we mention that the iPAQ is the best-looking executive PDA around?''
