Pete -Re:"Where does the word "apology" appear?" The word "sorry" was used 3 times in the letter from the US Ambassador to China. One of these used the words "very sorry" You can find text of the letter on the internet. Standard English usage says this is the same as the word "apology". See Roget's Thesaurus Standard Chinese translation says this means "a kow-tow apology".
