Sonnny,

I emailed them about inaccurate information about a standard for 56k, which they said 56kflex was the standard.--this the response i got. they don't seem to have clue about much!!! I asked them where they got their info about the 56k standard??

here is the repsonse from Erols...(btw-several days later)

We deeply apologize at any delay you see in this response. We discovered an
error in the responder and have corrected it at this time. Again, My
apologies
for any delay in recieving this message.

Dear Customer,

The follwing information is general in nature and covers most of the basic
problems that people have when connectiong to Erol's. I have broken it down
into section with large headers so that you can scan down through for your
particular problem. Please look through carefully many times theproblems
people see are due to the things listed here. if for some reason your question
is not covered in this posting write to MELVILLE@EROLS.COM for a more in depth
response to your question. Please be sure to repost the origional question as
Melville does not have access to your previous postings.

DNS PROBLEMS ( connecting, getting disconnected )

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

minimum of a 486 33 MGHRTZ processor speed
minimum of 8 MB of RAM
at least a 14000 BPS modem

with these configurations you should be able to set up the system, with
the warning that it will be SLOW... Netscape is a huge resource hog and
will chew up that memory faster than you can say netscape.

INITIAL SETUP INFORMATION:

many of the settings we use are generic to every setup

primary DNS: 205.252.116.10
secondary DNS: 205.252.116.19
(note the pamphlets we send out have .61 and .62 they also work,
we have two sets of DNS numbers available)

host: (your userid)
domain: erols.com

header compression should be on
TCP/IP should be on
logon to network should be on
software compression should be on
default gateway should be on

The above information is found in the DIAL UP NETWROKING area, under
the
properties for the erol's connection.

EMAIL (can't recieve, can't send, Can't see)

First and foremost, when using Netscape mail, Maximize the mail
window, the messages do not open in new windows, they appear at
the bottom
of the mail window.

for EUDORA:
the pop account should read: (userid)@pop.erols.com
the SMTP server is: smtp.erols.com

these settings are found and should be set under the hosts icon in
the settings listing.

FOR NETSCAPE:

under the mail and news preferences, server settings you should have
the following:

outgoing mail: smtp.erols.com
incoming mail: pop.erols.com
pop3 username: (your userid) *** notice this is NOT your email
address JUST the userid
that you use to login with)

for the news server you should have :

news.erols.com

FTP (can't find file, no dir listing, Forbidden, can't log into server)

For most FTP problems there is little we can fix through email.
if you are having trouble with your Web space, please contact
customer relations by phone at 1-800-erols-pc ext 2010
the custrel@erols.com address is also a good way to go. they can
ensure that
your directory is created and setup and if not they can get it started for
you.

Erol's offers a very limited support for this service. You must use a
seperate FTP program and the creation and implementation of the web files is
entirely up to the individual customer, erols cannot add or remove anything
from your web space.

there are some instructions on our web site for adding CGI scripting to
your accounts, please refer to that for those items. I wish there were more
we
could offer, but the vast amount of FTP information does not allow us to
be
any more specific....

MODEMS (56K, Kflex, X2)

Erol's will be working with AScend to hopefully get a system that is
compatible with USR's X2 tech, but until that time we will only be supporting
the Kflex standard of 56K. This will not function with uSR modems. Our 56K
capability should be up and running within the next 3 months.

Due to the nature of the problem dealing with the modem there is very little
that can be
done through email. I can suggest only a few things to help with any
problems you may have.

All Erol's connections are available at up to 33.6 speeds.

#1 if you are changing computers: re-run the account setup program and set
the modem up
as the brand it is, OR set it up as a standard hayes compatible of the
closest speed to
what you have (ie 33.6 modem users set theirs up as 28.800)

#2 for each modem speed you shoudl set up the maximim speed in the dialler
to twice teh
rating on the modem (ie 14,400 should be 19200, and 28,800 should be 57600
and 33.6 modems
should be 115k)(i know this isn't really double, but there is backround in
fo that makes it make sense)

#3 if you are using winmdows 3.1 you need to set the port speed in the
control panel to
match the modem setting exactly...(ie 14.4=14.4 and so on)

NEWS ( newsgroup reading, downloading, posting)

The news Erols news server is: news.erols.com

We are trying to keep the news servers up to date and running
smoothly..we appreciate your patience and your attention...I
appreciate the little notices that many of you send me when something
seems to be wrong...most times they are our first notice of a
problem... so I thank you...

There is a site available to go to for a hardcopy list of the erols
newsgroups the site is
below, and will be updated from time to time. it is not 100% perfect, there
will be groups
listed that may no longer be in effect, and the new newsgroups will be
added on at the end of the listings as time allows. This site was created by
one of our
email response members in the hopes that it would assist some of you in
getting the majority
of our groups.

PASSWORDS (can't save, lost, forgotten, not authenticating)

There are a few basic items about password problems we can check, but the
majority of times if you are having trouble with a password you will need to
contact us by phone. I cannot transmit your information to you through email
thus rendering this method of tech support rather less than helpful.

If you wish to change your password please go to the online change page:

password.erols.com

If you have done this PLEASE wait 24-48 hours for the change to take effect.
This
information must be processed by the system and updated. our user dumps go
through
approximately every 4 hours. This is how our system is updated.

if you are checking email and recieve a password message, please note that
this is a
generic response from the program and it may not be a password problem at
all.

Always keep your password somewhere safe so that if something should happen
you have the
correct spelling and capitolization of it handy. The new system we have been
using for a
bit now creates very random passwords. be sure that you have it typed in co
rrectly.

If you are having trouble with a greyed out save password area please go to
the following
URL:

help.netscape.com

TELNET/ REMOTE Connections

We regret to inform you that erol's does not offer a telnet machine for
connecting to your erols email account. You can however if you have access to
the internet outside of teh erols service areas, use netscape mail and
configure the mail and news preferences/server settings with teh following
information:

incoming mail server : pop.erols.com

outgoing mail server : smtp.erols.com

pop3 username : YOUR userid

with these settings you can check your erols email from anywhere in the world
as long as you have internet access.

MARYLAND 10 DIGIT DIALING

Please post to CUSTREL@EROLS.COM for a very good description of how to get
the 10 digit number to stay in your dialer. Also look on our web site for a
very good page on this as well.

I understand that this is a very long message, and that it is a general
posting. but to be able to respond to you all on a timely basis this is
necessary. If after perusing this post you have not found the answer to your
questions you have the following options:

#1 contact us by phone at 1-800-erols-pc

#2 RE-post your questions to MELVILLE@EROLS.COM for a more in depth
response

Thank you for your time and Patience.
