SINGAPORE BETS ON CHIPS: Despite a global slump in
semiconductor demand, Singapore plans to build a fourth
wafer-fabrication park next year to stay competitive when the
industry recovers, George Yeo, the trade and industry minister,
said. The government has already set aside a 60-hectare
(148-acre) plot of land for the proposed park, which will be built
in phases beginning sometime in 2002, Mr. Yeo said. The plant is
the first in Singapore to manufacture 12-inch wafers, which global
companies are increasingly using in their race to build the fastest
and smallest computer chips. Wafers are flat, round sheets used in
factories to make microchips.
