ROK Launches CDMA Marketing in Asia

By Kim Deok-hyun
Staff Reporter

Information and Communication Minister Yang Seung-taik today will be visiting China
and Mongolia as a special presidential envoy to support the sale of code division
multiple access (CDMA) technology.

During his six-day visit, Minister Yang plans to deliver to Chinese leaders President
Kim's personal letter expressing hope for greater cooperation between the two
countries in the information and telecommunication sectors.

He will also meet with officials from China Unicom, which plans to adopt CDMA
technology to develop its third-generation (3G) mobile phone system.

China Unicom, the country's second largest mobile phone service provider, recently
unveiled a 70 billion yuan ($8.46 billion) investment plan in CDMA mobile phone
networks over the next three years.

The nationwide network will cover 300 cities and is expected to attract 13.3 million
customers this year, with growth of more than 10 million subscribers per year,
according to the ministry.

Yang plans to ask Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji to pay special attention to Korean
equipment makers which are bidding for China Unicom's CDMA business.

The Samsung and LG groups, two of the bidders, have expressed interest in promoting
ties with China to build its telecommunications infrastructure.

Yang is also expected to propose a joint road show of small- and medium- sized
companies from both countries to major Chinese cities when he meets China's
information industry minister. The move is expected to facilitate a greater exchange of
know-how between Korean and Chinese firms.

In Mongolia, the minister will meet with President Natsagiin Bagabandi and other
ranking officials to exchange views on furthering cooperation between the two
countries in the telecommunications field.

Korea Telecom bought a 40 percent stake in the Mongolian Telecommunications
Company in August 1995. Also, SK Telecom and Taihan Electric Wire are the largest
shareholders in SKY Telecom, which has adopted CDMA technology.

Separately, the minister is scheduled to visit Indonesia with domestic
information-technology entrepreneurs to seek a cooperative relationship between two
countries in the software and telecoms equipment sectors.
