Pakistan, China's side kick and benefactor, takes sides. Surprise, surprise! Many Sensible Americans would have wished to have sent the navy seals to rescue the crew and destroy the surveillance plane. It was an appealing idea, but had to be deferred for diplomacy to work. With 60 billion dollars going one way to China every year, it is better that China keeps all its orifices tightly shut and not provoke US. Now that the Nixonian tilt is rectified, pakistan is pontificating.

President Bush's style smacked of arrogance and gunboat diplomacy which mercifully didn't find favour with many sensible Americans. The Chinese are being unfairly accused of brinkmanship by their detractors, forgetting the fact
that this simply could not have been their option, given their move to join the WTO and to host the 2008 Olympics. In fact, though firm, they were remarkably discreet in their approach throughout the crisis. The 24-man crew was treated well and released as soon as an accord was reached.
