Another thought prompted from my son who is tired of hearing me complain.

In general the internet is saturated in Boston. It is very hard to get a clean route through Boston. In essence, Boston's infrastructure is in need of massive expansion and upgrading but no one is forth coming with the capitol to do it. And since all providers are equal in this respect it's not like you have somewhere better to go. It is possible, when negotiating the provider contracts for service in Boston, to ask for and get certain specifications for your own line that will improve the situation somewhat, but again, the problem is the entire infrastructure in the Boston area is overloaded. There is only so much that can be done.

Maybe these guys should look some game code for their network transmission. Seriously. Games like Tribes2 have the most advanced network transmission code you can get ( and the engine/source is licensable for 100 bucks ). One of the most impressive things about tribes was the network code, how much data they were shoveling through a very small pipe, in Tribes 2 they've further refined the network code to gain even more efficiency. The amount of data being shoveled through the internet for real time quotes pales to the amount of data being shoveled to play tribes/tribes2. I think the general philosophy is pack the data being sent back and forth as tight as you possibly can because it's quicker to pack and unpack it with today's machines then it is to send it in a raw, directly usable, format.
