A clarification on terms - "NetPC" generally does NOT refer to a diskless PC, but one which is a "sealed case". See the story about IBM's "NetPC" at www.news.com.

I don't beleive that there will be very many diskless workstations at all. Sun would like you to think that Java can allow you to do that, but I don't think that option is going to be very popular.

The two thing driving the NetPC are:

1. Workstation cost reduction, through the use of a "sealed case" computer with no expansion options.

2. Centralized management and control, with cost, maintainability, and political factors contributing to this desire.

While I DON'T beleive that the NetPC will be ultimately succesful, if you DO beleive that it will be, it does not paint a bullish scenario for removable storage, becuase removable storage is simply not a part of the "vision".
