On the question of 'advertising' - i think you'd lose a lot if you banned it completely ... there is considerable quid pro quo in some cases, posters who have much to contribute as they 'tout' their sites, and some of the sites are quite useful in themselves .... here i'm thinking of - Member 1542953
... who runs this site - goldsheetlinks.com ... which is without parallel as a centre of free precious metals information ... and Bob J is genuinely interested in discussion, he's a mainstay of the metals threads, contributes a great deal, never descends to incivility, and is one of the principal reasons i make time to lurk those threads.

... but who never pushes them on you ... he is unfailingly a gentleman in discussion, puts out a lot of free and gratis information ... another valuable draw to the metals sector of SI imho ... any message board is better off with these guys than without them.

We've seen some shameful examples of self-appointed gurus squabbling and touting their dubious services [mentioning no names], but i don't think an absolute ban on 'advertising' per se is the way to regulate out the garbage .... you don't want to lose the good stuff.
