Speculation ..maybe fantasy.. of course, but just the possibility makes me chuckle. Re: Hugh's post on the SI board about Karen's comment that problems with MR head supply would suggest that the speed of the industry's shift to MR has been somewhat exaggerated. I certainly agree. More than somewhat.
Now what market would a newly reformed, hungry drivemaker make its initial run at. Surely not the one dominated by manufacturers like Seagate and IBM - whose commmitment to MR heads and experience in using them is long standing. And of course, as I understand it, MR production yields, and therefore costs, are a year away from becoming similar to those of inductive heads. So with everyone strolling from the theatre of hard drive operations ....headed towards the MR exits .... Maxtor's pronouncement that they plan to be 100% MR by the end of the year might be yelling fire just in amused hopes of speeding up the exit. Pleased that the MR shift is leaving the other makers with an even higher cost basis for a given range of drives ....confident in the knowledge that they have a tech in hand that will reduce their costs as the other competitors are increasing theirs. Which increases their edge in their initial forays into market share grabbing.
