I read an article awhile back, which I can't find now, that talked about some American hikers in a remote region of some far flung country who bought some unusual animal horns from a local. They brought the horns back and were convinced they had discovered a rare species of antelope or goat, they didn't know what. The horns were shown around a couple of universities, and sure nuff, the animal wound up on the endangered species list. I guess someone in the group was plugged into Washington.

When they sent a team back there they found out the indigenous people of that region liked to heat up common goat horns and mold them into new shapes.
