Eco-Efficiency

The term "eco-efficiency" was coined by the Business Council for Sustainable Development,
now the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The WBCSD has
defined eco-efficiency as:

"the delivery of competitively-priced goods and services that satisfy human
needs and bring quality of life, while progressively reducing ecological impacts
and resource intensity throughout the life cycle, to a level at least in line with
the Earth's estimated carrying capacity."

To give the concept more grounding in practical terms, the WBCSD further defined
eco-efficiency as being comprised of the following seven key elements:

reducing the material intensity of goods and services;
reducing the energy intensity of goods and services;
reducing the dispersion of toxic materials;
enhancing the recyclability of materials;
maximizing the sustainable use of renewable resources;
extending the durability of products; and,
increasing the service intensity of goods and services.

Essentially, eco-efficiency means doing more with less; making production processes more
efficient, and creating new and better products with fewer resources and less pollution.

Because of its origins within the business community, eco-efficiency has been described as
the "business link to sustainable development." The following sites contain more information
on the concept and practice of eco-efficiency.
