Re: Without Scumbria I might forget what a piece -- ---- the P4 is.

How can you say that? It is compatible with much of the installed base and there are even a few programs that don't run really slowly on it (like if you do nothing but run Quake all day at low resolution).

Evidently P4 enhances your internet experience by crashing on web sites that use certain Java features.

But don't worry, there's an update that can patch the P4's problem.

I wonder what other software uses the code sequences that cause P4 to fail on these Java apps? At least buyers don't have to suffer the stigma of not paying extremely high prices for their PCs.

Innovative's Java Runtime Environment for the Millennium Serials and Circulation clients won't run on our new Dell Pentium IV computers. We've been able to solve the problem by installing a Java 2 1.3 environment from Sun and adjusting the target on the Millennium icon so that it uses the newer version.

Update: Intel Pentium 4 Processor support for J2SETM v 1.2.2 for Windows is now available for download. Current J2SE v 1.2.2 for Windows users who want to run their J2SE v 1.2.2 based Java applets or applications on new Pentium 4 systems must upgrade to J2SE v 1.2.2_007 for Windows. Alternatively, Pentium 4 systems are also supported by the more current release of J2SE - the JavaTM 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition v 1.3.0 and higher.

Previous releases of the J2SE v 1.2.x for Windows that include the Symantec JIT will not run on Pentium 4 systems (Solaris and Linux J2SE releases for Intel are not affected).
