They are called "stepable plants", cultivated for this purpose. I planted Thymus Elfin, Thymus pseudolanuginosus (wooly), and Thymus serpyllum (pink Chintz) around a little garden I am developing next to my patio. Full or part sun.
In another area, more shaded, I planted Veronica repens (Creeping Speedwell), Vereonica repens (Sunshine) and Sedum album var. chloraticum (Baby tears) - which are all so cute. The colors and shapes are different, which adds same to the garden.
I also hung up the hanging plants: fuchsia (for the hummingbirds), Lantana (full hot sun) and a red verbena for the front of my house, which is white. And planted colorful dahlias for the pots by the front door. All color-coordinated! LOL
Anyway, I always go to a nursery where my daughter's best friend's mother is the resident horticulturist and knows all this stuff. Top quality products too.
This issue of Consumer Reports rates the large stores. The most highly rated, of course, is the local nursery.
