Incidentally, most people that I know would not make religion solely, or even principally, an issue of someone keeping score of one's actions.

Keeping score may be a minor part of religion for a believer, but for a non-believer it's THE salient part. If there is some authority enforcing a penalty on non-believers in the afterlife, then one really doesn't have a choice but to believe and submit. If there is no penalty in the afterlife, one can choose to believe or not based on what one observes in life. You know how fond I am of choice. <g>
