I continue to suspect that QCOM's intellectual property is a decaying asset. The first patent was issued in 1985. That was probably for 17 years so it will expire next year. Of course, many many other important patents have been obtained by QCOM since then, and even now, doubtless they are busy patenting CDMA related new features. However, it is usually the case with new technologies that the first several patents are the most important and the most difficult for a competitor to invent his way around them. The subsequent patents may have more easily substituted technologies. Even if the cost of the alternative solution is a trifle more than using the intellectual property of the inventors, there is the saving of not having to pay royalties. So I worry what is the exact situation with QCOM'S patents, when do the important ones expire. Even if the expiration date is some "far off" time like 2010, nine years is a finite time and we know that the telcoms worldwide are having a hard time raising money so getting into 2.5G or 3G may consume more of those nine years than investors in QCOM would like. This scenario is certainly hypothetical. But the truth is I don't know what the real situation is. I have raised this question before and was given assurances by one or two people who may not know that much more than I do, which is precious little. Is there any one out there with definite knowledge on this point?
