AMD needs good kicking...
...and gets it on Palomino, mobile Athlons By Mike Magee, 14 April 2001 17.31 BST (Just before we get round to this rant, we have heard from a Euro AMD vendor that the firm will react to Intel's proposed Pentium 4 cuts shortly after the end of this month, and not let Chipzilla off the extremely fierce pricing ropes. More when we get it, but for now on with the rant. MM) WHILE INTEL GETS A REGULAR KICKING from us when it has problems with chipsets, 64-bit CPUs and 32-bit CPUs, AMD has generally managed to escape such grievous bodily harm. But we fear the time is approaching when it is beginning to deserve a bashing, although there are always cries of foul play when AMD gets beaten up on. Indeed, even AMD executives look at you with hurt, soulful spaniel eyes when you've written something that's upset them, almost as if you owe them a favour or something, even when you don't. We can only suppose that this is because Intel is considered to be the top dog in the x.86 industry, and that makes AMD an underdog, and therefore to be pitied. Well, sorry, AMD. We don't have any pity for you and let's face it you don't really deserve it in this case, do you guys? Where are those mobile Athlons that we first heard about when we were at Computex years ago? And where is this famous Palomino core that is going to knock the socks off anything Chipzilla pushes out the door? The mobile Athlons, as we reported in Another Place some months ago, were facing difficult build problems and the ODMs (that is, the Taiwanese manufacturers who make the faceless notebooks which later get the logos) also had some difficulties, particularly with heat dissipation and chassis. Still, when we asked AMD this question only a month or so ago, we were under the definite impression that pretty soon we'd see some units with mobile Athlons in 'em. We haven't seen any...
