They are somewhat tolerant of some religions. They never liked Tibetan Buddhism, but they tolerate some other forms of Buddhism. They do not like any form of religion that greatly undermines political authority- which is why they hate Falun Gong so much (a mix of Buddhism and Taoism). I believe China's constitution expresses some respect for freedom of religion- which of course is not followed in practice to any consistent degree, but still, it is there I think. I'll go dig it up for you if you are interested.
