Re: Your reply to Paul's post was a diatribe, but didn't endeavor to address the topic:

What's to address? They are late. It would be nice for AMD if they were already here. Where is the 1.13GHZ PIII? Where is the 1999 release of Merced (Itanium)? Where is anything fabbed with copper from Intel?

Detailed information is available about Tyan's dual processor server boards for Athlons. Reports are that they have been sampling and are now entering volume production (though I suspect that "volume" will be pretty limited, for awhile). Will there ever be an Athlon notebook? I don't know, but eventually it will probably happen. AMD's been doing reasonably well without one recently, so the lack doesn't appear to be critical.

Every high tech effort is something of a gamble, and some are late and some are never.

Bottom line is that AMD is sitting pretty with decent, competitive, products and no near term major capex needs. They can just hunker down and ride out the storm with plant they built 2 years ago.

Intel has no choice but to spend like crazy this year and next - Sanders was right when pulled out all the stops on capex in 1998 - 2000 and he looks right again when he started getting vague on AMD's near term FAB plans. The smart thing to do now is to try to make money with the stuff you already bought, and AMD is in a position to do just that. Intel isn't and they are in for a rough time because of it - they are going to have to increase their costs in this terrible year, however much they may wish they didn't have to.
