Paul, thunderbird is the code name for the present version of Athlon and palamino is the code name for the next Athlon version, just as wilamette is the present P4 version and the northwood version will replace it. But the products that compete are P4s and Athlons. The present Athlon is slaughtering the present P4 in the marketplace - to the stunned surprise of both Intel and AMD.

Athlon is outselling P4 by a factor of 2 to 4.

Tiny AMD's flagship is outselling gorilla Intel's flagship by a factor of 2 to 4.

AMD had a tough time earlier in the year because they had scaled Athlon starts way back in the expectation that P4 would take back a lot of market share for Intel.

It didn't happen that way, and AMD had to scramble to increase Athlon wafer starts.
