That's nice of you, Ed. I just did something to winzip -- subjected it to a process of some sort -- via CleanSweep. It was not exactly intentional, it was intended more to be sort of exploratory, and suddenly something was happnin'. I see that WinZip is still showing as one of my programs, so I figured CleanSweep did something salutary and maybe would help the locked by a disk utility problem.
But I tried again to defrag after this exciting process and got the annoying msg again.
I also got it earlier this evening when I tried to defrag, and my heart sank because I realized all the bonding I did with my close friends Meghana and Viram hadn't resulted in anything but one defrag, not in a solution.
But I thought I'd try Safe Mode again, and did thecow's f5 key on the beep reboot, and this time it was just Safe Mode, not Safe DOS, and a Safe Mode Troubleshooter menu came up, and although nothing there quite applied, I did a Search in a handy slot, and under "conserving disk space," found a button to click for defragging in safe mode.
Which I did, sucessfully.
I assume that means that although I'd used the wonderful Enditall and shut down everything except Explorer, Systray and Enditall, plus disabling my screensaver, it's probably a software glitch. And that unless I can figure out what the glitch is, I defrag in Safe Mode from now on.
It could be worse.
It is odd, though.
Still, I'm very happy that the earlier experience taught me enough to figure out how to do that. This entire post is, in fact, bragging. Sort of. LOL. |
