Jon,

It makes alot of sense for $Bill Gates to invest in cable. Cable's biggest problem has been getting the cash to roll out advanced services via HFC and MSFT's biggest challenge is how to effectively invest its huge cash flow. This investment is a win-win situation. From everything I've heard, cable modems blow away all other forms of access. Now Gates gets the eyeballs he needs for the advanced video services he intends to deliver over the Net.

As for @Home. Yes, the timing of the announcement couldn't have been better. Bill's cash will certainly help. My question is whether @Home's implementation is significantly different from and better than other cable modem installations. If so, how do they differentiate their product? I would be interested in any comparisons of @Home with other 2-way services. Also, given the importance of economies of scale, how closely do the Cox, Comcast, and TCI systems coincide? Are there alot of areas where they are contiguous? Are they actively swapping territories or joint venturing to link up economically?

TIA,
SC
